What is Nickel Alloy?

Nickel alloys are made up of nickel as the major element, along with chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, and other elements that are added to make them more resistant to corrosion and stronger at high temperatures. Some grades are solid solution reinforced to make them tougher and less likely to crack, while others are precipitation hardened to make them exceptionally strong following heat treatment. The chemical makes protective oxide layers that don’t break down in acids, chlorides, and caustics, and it keeps the material strong and stable from very cold to very hot temperatures.

Benefits of Nickel Alloy

Nickel alloys are popular because they work well when failure is expensive. They don’t get pitting, crevice attack, or stress corrosion cracking in seawater or chloride brines. They can handle both reducing and oxidising acids used in chemical processing, and they don’t change as the temperature changes. Many grades maintain functional strength at high temperatures and have good creep resistance, which is beneficial in heaters, reformers, and turbine hot sections. On the other end of the scale, they stay tough even at very low temperatures. Good weldability with approved processes and predictable behaviour after heat treatment lower the danger of making things. The basic cost is more than carbon or stainless steel, but the total cost of ownership frequently goes down because you don’t have to replace it as often.

Applications of Nickel Alloy

Nickel alloys are often used in chemical plants, refineries, and offshore platforms where there are combined acids, chlorides, and sour service. They are employed in pipes, valves, reactors, heat exchangers, and columns that are exposed to both heat and corrosion. Power and high-temperature service use them in parts for reformer tubes, furnaces, and superheaters. High-strength grades are important for fasteners, engine parts, and hot-section hardware in the aerospace industry. Their ability to withstand chloride attack and acid condensates is also useful in desalination, chilling saltwater, bleaching pulp and paper and treating flue gas. Nickel alloys are used in the fabrication of electronics, batteries, and pharmaceuticals where cleanliness and media purity are important.

Types and Grades

Nickel alloys can be grouped into a few useful categories. Nickel copper grades like 400 and K500 are ideal for seawater service and are robust. Nickel chromium grades like 600 and 601 can withstand heat and oxidation. Nickel chromium molybdenum families like 625, C-276, and C-22 can handle a wide range of chemicals, including acids that oxidise and acids that reduce. Nickel iron chromium grades like 800H/HT and 825 find the right mix between strength, stability, and resistance to corrosion for process and power equipment. Grades like 718 and 725 that are hardened by precipitation have very high strength and good corrosion resistance, making them great for fasteners and parts that have to hold a lot of weight. Nickel grades 200 and 201 that are commercially pure are used in high-purity and caustic applications. Choosing relies on the media, temperature, pressure, permissible stress, and the way the item was made.

Processing and Services

We offer material in either annealed or solution annealed form. For age hardening grades, we offer solution treated, aged, or ready to age material. Services include cutting, beveling, bending, and machining utilising tools that work well with nickel alloys.
